Otoplasty

Otoplasty:
What is it and how is it performed?

The term "Otoplasty" is used to describe a series of surgical procedures designed to correct the shape or position of the ear, making changes to the shape and position of the ears. This procedure can be performed at any age and is generally performed for aesthetic purposes, although it is also used for reconstruction.

Ear deformities can be due to birth defects, trauma, infection, or other causes and can cause pain and discomfort, as well as affect a person's self-esteem.

Simply put, Otoplasty straightens or resizes the ears by cutting away parts of the cartilage behind the ear and then stitching the skin together to get a better shape and size.

It can also be used to correct any defect in the ear. The ears are one of the most prominent features on people's faces, so they should always be in proportion to the face.

How is Otoplasty performed?

To begin, the surgeon will make an incision behind the ear and remove the excess cartilage. Later, he will mold and reshape the cartilage until get the desired appearance. He will then sew up the incision and cover it with gauze to give it time to heal.

The upper part of the ear, called the helix, can be adjusted using Otoplasty. It can also reduce or improve a protruding ear that can be caused by cauliflower ear. The fold of skin at the back of the ear can also be removed in this surgery if necessary to give your ears the desired appearance.

The surgery takes between 1 to 2 hours depending on the severity and complexity of the procedure. It involves cutting the skin and cartilage of the ear to form a new, more angular shape.

La cirugía toma entre 1 a 2 horas dependiendo de la severidad y complejidad del procedimiento. Se trata de cortar la piel y el cartílago de la oreja para formar una nueva forma más angular.

Benefits of Otoplasty

  • Increases confidence:
People with asymmetrical ears may feel a little uncomfortable with their appearance, having symmetrical ears helps people feel more confident.
  • Improve symmetry:
Symmetry refers to the balance between the left and right sides of the body. When one side of the face or ear is different from the other, asymmetry is created. A person who has asymmetrical ears may feel uncomfortable and experience self-image issues. An Otoplasty surgery can help restore symmetry to the ears.
  • Reduces pain:
If the ears are not symmetrical, they can hurt. Painful ears often lead to headaches, nausea, and fatigue. After undergoing Otoplasty, patients report less pain and a better quality of life.
  • Helps prevent future complications:
Asymmetrical ears can lead to hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and other problems. Patients who undergo Otoplasty have a lower risk of developing these conditions.

What are the risks of Otoplasty?

  • A bad scar
  • Eyelid drooping can occur due to nerve damage and also due to lack of sleep from being awake for surgery
  • Risk of asymmetry due to swelling and scarring (but may be temporary)
  • Risk of infection if not done properly
