What's Blepharoplasty and why is it performed?
Blepharoplasty is one of several types of cosmetic surgery designed to improve facial appearance. This procedure involves the removal of excess tissue around the eyes. In some cases, it is used to correct droopy upper eyelids, bags under the eyes, and wrinkles.
It is one of the most common plastic surgeries worldwide. Consists of removing fatty tissue from the eyelids to improve the appearance of the eyes. Depending on the type of intervention, it can be performed on the entire eyelid or only on the upper eyelid.
The main objective of this surgery is to reduce the size of the eye bags, thus improving the general appearance of the face. However, there are many different techniques to achieve this goal.
During blepharoplasty, the surgeon makes incisions in the crease of the eyelid to remove sagging skin, muscle, and fat. The surgeon then reattaches the skin with small absorbable stitches, and the procedure takes about 30 minutes for each eye.
After the procedure
You can usually go home after surgery within 24 hours. You may experience some swelling and tenderness around the incision site. The surgeon could prescribe an analgesic to control the pain.
Among the indications after surgery is keeping the head elevated for as long as possible for several days. This helps prevent blood clots from forming under the skin, among other tips that the surgeon will indicate.
Blepharoplasty risks and considerations.
All surgeries have risks, such as reactions to anesthesia and blood clogs. But what are some of the most common? These are some of the risks you may encounter during eyelid surgery:
-
Infection and bleeding:The risk of infection is very low, but it does happen. If there is a problem with the incision site, an infection could result. You may experience swelling around the eye, redness, pain, itching, discharge, and fever. These symptoms usually disappear in a few days. If you have already undergone eye surgery, there is an increased risk of complications.
-
Dry and irritated eyes:Your eyes may be dry and irritated immediately after surgery. This is normal, however, if you notice excessive tearing, redness, burning, stinging, irritation, or crusting, an evaluation is important.
-
Difficulty closing the eye or some other problems with the eyelids.
