Rhinoplasty

What is Rhinoplasty and how is it performed?

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that reshapes either to reduce, increase the size or correct the nose, it has been used for the last 20 years. It is one of the most popular surgeries and with excellent results.

Rhinoplasty may be performed to help with nasal problems, breathing problems, or cosmetic reasons. It consists of rebuilding the nose by changing its shape, size and/or angle. This surgery helps patients achieve the desired appearance of their nose.

How is Rhinoplasty performed?

The first step in Rhinoplasty is to determine what should or needs to be done according to the patient. Subsequently, the surgeon will mark the desired changes in the skin and in this step the patient will also be informed about what will be done.

The surgeon will measure the size and shape of a patient's nose, then use those measurements to build an artificial cartilage cast. This mold will be placed on the nose and left to act for about 10 minutes so that it can take its exact dimensions.

Before surgery, an anesthetic is administered and the patient is then placed under general anesthesia. The doctor will make an incision and remove any bone or cartilage that may need it, to help give better shape and more room for blood vessels to grow into the new tissue forms after surgery. In general, there are three types of incisions: closed (sutures into the skin), open (cut through the skin), and endonasal (through the nostrils).

To control bleeding during surgery and reduce post operative bruising, a vascular technique called electrocautery can be used.

Rhinoplasty typically takes 1-2 hours and is performed on an outpatient basis. The surgeon will first sedate the patient before making incisions in the nose to reshape it. Then, with the help of a mold, he will change the shape of the cartilage and reposition it to correct any anomaly or asymmetry that may exist. This mold can be made from plaster or 3D images taken during previous consultations.

After repairing any defects, the surgeon will sew around the nostrils and reattach them with temporary stitches for about a week before removing them.

What are the benefits of a Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty can help improve breathing by reducing nasal obstruction, appearance, and can also contribute to higher self-esteem.

On the other hand, it is also useful in helping to solve some problems such as droopy eyelid or concave face shape caused by weight loss or aging.

Some other benefits are: correction of respiratory problems such as nasal congestion, nosebleeds and facial pressure; deviated septum correction; reduction of the size of the nose for people with large noses.
